History

At All Saints Church School we inspire children to become historians, exploring the past and the diversity of human experience both in Britain and across the world. Children are encouraged to be curious, ask questions and draw comparisons and connections between different periods of history. Our History curriculum enables children to discover and explore through hands-on experiences, meeting and connecting with real people and through visiting buildings and museums, where they can expand their thinking and develop perspective.

Through our history topics, children develop their critical thinking skills, debating skills and empathy with others. The carefully planned progression engages learners in learning about the past and how past events have impacted their lives today. We utilise cross-curricular links and use STEAM challenges to bring history to life.

Stone-age STEAM challenge

We are lucky enough to be situated in the historic village of Montacute, so much of our history curriculum is based around local history and Montacute House. We often visit the house, researching life in Victorian Britain, or to study the architecture of the building. Local people visit the school, sharing their experiences and teaching the children about the former uses of various buildings in the village.

Wherever possible, we visit relevant sites to bring learning to life. Throughout the academic year, trips are taken to enhance the curriculum.
